Ladybugs
Ladybugs are excellent general predators and both adult and larval ladybugs are voracious consumers of aphids.
Ladybugs are available from Sage Garden Herbs during the early summer season. As of July 22, 2010 we have bags of 1,000 available. The price is $18.95 for 1,000 (and $29.95 for 4,500, when available). Ladybugs are sold first come first serve - but feel free to call ahead to ensure availability (204-257-2715).
1,000 ladybugs covers a garden area of 550 sq. feet.
Plan to release the ladybugs in the morning or evening, but not during the heat of mid-day. To release the ladybugs, water the garden lightly and open the bag. The ladybugs will emerge on their own and self distribute, or you can help them along and put them near aphid hot spots!
The ladybugs offered through Sage Garden Herbs are native species that will not have negative impact on existing ladybug populations.
