Description: Dramatic garden perennial, with thick stalks and yellow globe flowers. Traditionally used in candy and herbal medicine. Always gets attention in our display gardens!

Latin Name: Angelica archangelica
Main Uses: Landscape, medicinal, culinary

Zone Hardiness: Zone 3
Exposure: Full Sun to Part Shade

Flowering Time: Late June

Certified Organic: USDA Certified Organic

Germination Instructions: Germination: 5 - 10 days at 21° C.
Pre-treatment: Store seeds in the refrigerator until sowing to extend viability.
Sowing: Indoors 6 weeks before planting out. Sow 3 - 5 seeds per cell or plug. For best results, fertilize right from first watering with a kelp based fertilizer such as Sea Magic™. Direct seed late May.
Planting Depth: Lightly cover.
Planting Out: Plant in well drained fertile soil (garden or container) once seedlings are established and risk of frost has passed.

Pruning: Cut spent flowers if reseeding is not desired.

Growing in Containers: Large containers only.

Fertilizing (Containers): Add 25% Sea Soil™ to potting mix at time of transplant, then fertilize with Total Nourish™ or other balanced organic fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season.

Watering (Containers): Water deeply as soil becomes dry to the touch. During the hot months, check daily.

Growing in Mixed Planters: Suited for large mixed planters such as barrels.

Fertilizing (Garden): Amend garden bed with compost.

Watering (Garden): Average watering needs.

Beneficials Attracted to this Plant: Ladybugs Host for Swallowtail butterflies

Garden Companions: A great backdrop for part shade gardens. A feature plant in the medicinal herb garden.

Pest/Disease Issues: Some see the swallowtail caterpillars as pests, but they do not damage the plant and should be encouraged - the emerging butterflies are gorgeous! Aphids may feed on the seed heads.
